Kitchen handles are functional components that simultaneously significantly shape the design of a kitchen. Their selection requires balancing ergonomics, material quality, aesthetics, and the specific demands of daily use. This guide provides a technical overview of common handle variants, handleless systems, and essential quality features for your new kitchen.

    1. Classic handle types: form and function

    • Bar handle: Is a straight handle attached at two points on the kitchen fronts. Its geometric shape suits modern and linear kitchen designs. It offers a good gripping surface and allows secure operation, even with heavy and wide pull-outs. Installation can be horizontal or vertical.
    • Bow handle: Often a softer or curved variant of the bar handle. The ergonomic shape usually has no protruding corners, reducing the chance of catching on clothing. It is frequently used in more classic or modern country kitchens.
    • Knob handle: A handle fixed at one point. It is typical for traditional country kitchens and Scandinavian style. When operating heavy pull-outs, the force transmission on a single point can be perceived as less comfortable than with a bar or bow handle.
    • Shell handle (cup handle): A half-round handle grasped from below. It is primarily used for drawers and pull-outs and often combined with knob handles on the doors to create a harmonious overall look in classic or industrial-inspired designs.

    2. Handleless systems in the modern kitchen

The handleless kitchen offers a calm, flat appearance, mostly in modern kitchens. Operation is done via integrated or technical solutions.

    • Handle strip (groove strip): A metal or plastic profile recessed into the cabinet carcass (often in L or C shape). The front is opened by gripping the strip. This protects the fronts from fingerprints. However, the open strip can collect dust and dirt.
    • Handle recess: A recess milled directly into the edge of the front panel. This creates a very homogeneous look since no additional material is needed. However, the manufacturing process is complex and requires a precise, durable paint or coating in the recess.
    • Mechanical Push to Open: A spring mechanism is triggered by a light press on the front, opening the door or drawer slightly. This allows for a completely smooth surface. A disadvantage is the need to touch the front directly, which leaves fingerprints. Additionally, unintended opening can occur from leaning against it.
    • Electronic opening systems: A tap on the front activates a motor that gently opens the drawer or flap. These systems offer the highest comfort and are often combined with soft-closing damping. However, they are the most expensive solution and require a power supply.

    3. Quality features and material science

The durability of a handle depends on its material core, surface finishing, and workmanship.

    • Material core: Handles are often made of zinc die-cast, aluminum, or stainless steel. Solid stainless steel handles are heavier, more corrosion-resistant, and more robust than handles made of zinc die-cast that are only coated with a stainless steel layer. The higher weight is often an indicator of solid material.
    • Surface finishing: For colored or metallic-coated handles (e.g., matte black or brass look), the quality of the coating is crucial. Simple paints can wear off at the edges. More durable methods are powder coating or PVD coating (Physical Vapour Deposition), which offer higher abrasion resistance.
    • Processing: A high-quality handle has no sharp edges or burrs. The threads for the mounting screws should be cleanly cut and stable to ensure a secure fit for years.
    • Mounting standard: The distance between the two drill holes of a bar or bow handle is called the drill hole spacing (BA) and is given in millimeters. It is standardized in fixed increments (e.g., 96 mm, 128 mm, 160 mm), which facilitates later replacement.

    4. Recommendations for selecting kitchen handles

The choice of handle should consider functionality. It is possible and often sensible to combine different types of handles. For example, robust bar handles can be used on heavy drawers, while a more discreet solution like knob handles or a handleless variant can be chosen for less frequently used upper cabinets to create a calmer look in the upper field of vision.

The following points should be checked during sampling at the specialist retailer:

    • Tactile quality: Does the material feel high-quality? Are the edges cleanly finished?
    • Ergonomics: Is the handle easy and secure to grip? This is especially important for heavy drawers, which should be tested in the showroom.
    • Stability: Does the mounted handle feel stable, or does it give way under load?

A careful examination of these criteria ensures that the chosen handles remain both functional and aesthetically pleasing for many years.
