The quality and functionality of a kitchen are significantly determined by the technical properties of its mechanical components. Parts such as hinges, pull-out systems, and flap fittings define the ergonomics, durability, and user comfort in daily use. The selection of these fittings is therefore a functional and technical core decision in kitchen planning.

    1. Fitting systems for furniture: Base cabinets

Traditional base cabinets with hinged doors and shelves have ergonomic disadvantages because the rear storage space is difficult to access. Modern pull-out systems offer technical solutions for this.

    • Full extension: A key quality feature is the full extension. Unlike partial extension, the drawer fully extends out of the cabinet carcass. This allows a complete overview of the contents and direct access to all stored items from above.
    • Damping systems (Soft Close): Integrated dampers slow down the drawer in the last few centimeters and ensure controlled, quiet closing. This prevents noise and protects the material.
    • Load capacity: The quality of a pull-out system is also measured by its dynamic load capacity, specified in kilograms, and the tested service life, often expressed in movement cycles. High-quality systems ensure a consistently smooth and stable operation even under heavy loads.

    2. Fitting Systems for Furniture: Wall Cabinets

Classic hinged doors on wall cabinets can protrude into the room and pose a potential bump hazard. As an ergonomic alternative, flap fittings have been established that move the front upward. Four common functional principles are distinguished:

    • Folding Flap: A two-piece front folds in the middle when opened. This solution is suitable for tall wall cabinets, as the handle remains easily accessible even when open.
    • Swivel Flap: A one-piece front swivels upward over the carcass. This system requires free space above the cabinet.
    • Lift Flap: A one-piece front moves vertically upward parallel to the carcass. This design is suitable for wall cabinets above which there are additional cabinets or panels.
    • Upward Flap: A one-piece front swings upward in an arc. This is a space-saving solution for lower wall cabinets, such as above a refrigerator.

An important feature of these systems is the stepless stop, which securely holds the flap open in any desired position, as well as integrated damping for quiet closing.

    3. High-Quality Solutions for Handleless Fronts

The design trend towards handleless kitchens requires alternative opening mechanisms.

    • Mechanical Systems (Push to Open): A short press on the front activates a spring mechanism that opens the door or drawer slightly. This system is cost-effective and simple in technology. A disadvantage can be unintentional opening by leaning against it.
    • Electric Systems (Touch to Open): A short tap on the front, even with the knee or hip, triggers a sensor, causing an electric motor to open the drawer or flap. This offers high comfort, especially for waste collection systems. However, these systems are more expensive, require a power connection, and are technically more complex. They remain manually operable during a power outage.

    4. Precise Furniture Construction: Pocket Door Systems

For a maximally reduced look in open-plan kitchens, so-called pocket doors can be used. This system allows entire kitchen areas to be concealed. The large, often floor-to-ceiling doors are opened and then slid sideways into a narrow niche (a pocket) next to the cabinet carcass. This way, the doors are out of the way when open and do not interfere with freedom of movement or the room's aesthetics.

    Furniture Fittings: Conclusion

The choice of fittings is a fundamental technical decision in kitchen planning. It directly affects the ergonomics, safety, and long-term usability of the furniture. Investing in high-quality full-extension slides with damping and flap systems tailored to the spatial situation significantly contributes to daily functionality and user satisfaction.
