A fitted kitchen is designed for a service life of 15 to 20 years. However, over this time, usage requirements, technical standards, or personal taste may change. Instead of a complete replacement, there are often more sustainable and cost-effective alternatives. This guide analyzes the options for modernization, the challenges of moving, and the basics of value retention through proper care.

    1. Kitchen Modernization: Measures and Priorities

If the basic structure of the kitchen, especially the cabinet carcasses, is intact, targeted modernization can be a sensible alternative to a new purchase.

Prioritizing measures by budget and impact

    Low investment, high visual impact:

      • Replace handles: Replacing handles is the simplest and most cost-effective measure to change the style of a kitchen.
      • Renew backsplash: An old tile backsplash can be covered with special decorative panels made of acrylic glass, aluminum composite, or laminate without demolition work. A seamless backsplash in the same material as the countertop looks uniform and is easy to maintain.
      • Modernize lighting: Replacing old fluorescent tubes with modern LED under-cabinet lights significantly improves work quality and atmosphere.

        Medium investment, fundamental change:

        • Replace countertop: This has a very large effect on the overall appearance. It is the ideal time to also renew the sink and cooktop, as these must be removed and reinstalled anyway.
        • Renew electrical appliances: Replacing outdated appliances is often economically sensible. Modern refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens consume significantly less energy. The investment can pay off through the electricity bill. When purchasing, pay exact attention to the niche dimensions of the old appliances to avoid costly adjustments.

High investment, almost new kitchen look:

          • Renew fronts: This is the most effective but also the most expensive measure. There are three methods:
            1. Front replacement: The complete replacement of the fronts. This is the cleanest solution but requires that the old hinge holes fit exactly or that a carpenter adjusts the new fronts.
            2. Professional painting: Existing fronts can be sanded down and repainted by a specialist company. The quality of the result depends heavily on the professionalism of the executing company.
            3. Foiling: A more cost-effective alternative where a special furniture foil is applied to the old fronts. The durability is less than with paint, especially on edges and near heat sources (oven, dishwasher).

Cost framework A small refresh is possible for a few hundred euros. A medium modernization with a new laminate countertop and new appliances usually ranges between 3,000 and 7,000 euros. A complete front replacement with appliances can exceed 7,000 euros but usually remains below the price of a comparable new purchase.

    2. The Kitchen Move: Planning and Execution

Moving a fitted kitchen is a complex project whose economic viability and feasibility must be carefully examined.

Economic viability check The costs for a professional kitchen move (dismantling, transport, assembly) range between 800 and 2,000 euros depending on size and complexity. Almost always, costs for a new countertop and further adjustments are added. This total amount can exceed the current value of an older, simple kitchen. Therefore, a move usually only makes sense for high-quality and still relatively new kitchens.

    Checklist for planning

Feasibility check: Create an exact floor plan of the new room with the position of all water and power connections. Compare this plan with your current kitchen. The biggest problem is almost always the countertop. Due to individual cutting and cutouts, it usually does not fit into the new room and must be replaced. Calculate the cost of a new countertop from the start.

Selection of service provider: A kitchen move requires expertise. Errors in connecting water (water damage) or high voltage (danger to life) can have serious consequences. Hire a company specialized in kitchen assembly or a carpenter.

      • Checklist for qualification: Ask for references for similar projects. Clarify the warranty on assembly work. Ensure the company has sufficient liability insurance.
      • Budget for adjustments: Plan a budget for unavoidable adjustments in addition to the pure moving costs. These almost always include a new countertop, new plinths and finishing strips, and possibly small additional cabinets (filler pieces) if the new room is larger. If connections need to be relocated, costs for electrician and plumber are added.

    3. Value Retention through Proper Kitchen Care

Proper care determines how long a kitchen retains its appearance and function. Incorrect cleaning agents can permanently damage high-quality surfaces.

    General rules

    • Always use soft, clean cloths (cotton, leather cloth).
    • Use only mild, water-soluble, neutral cleaners (e.g., dishwashing solution).
    • Never use scouring agents, aggressive chemicals (e.g., chlorine-containing cleaners), or abrasive sponges.
    • Always wipe with clear water afterward and dry the surfaces thoroughly.

    Material-specific notes

    Fronts:

      • Plastic & laminate: Very robust and easy to care for.
      • Painted fronts (matte & high gloss): Do not use microfiber cloths as they can cause fine scratches. Soft cotton cloths are suitable. Glass cleaner should be avoided due to its alcohol content.
      • Wood fronts: Oiled surfaces should be treated 1 to 2 times a year with a special care oil. Always wipe only slightly damp.

        Countertops:

        • Laminate: Not cut-resistant (always use a cutting board) and only conditionally heat-resistant (coasters are required).
        • Natural stone (granite, marble): Must be treated regularly (depending on use every 6 to 12 months) with a special impregnation to prevent staining. Important note: Never use acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon) as these attack the stone, especially marble, and cause dull spots.
        • Solid wood: Very maintenance-intensive. Must be sanded and re-oiled every few months depending on use. Wipe up standing water immediately.
        • Ceramic & quartz composite: Extremely robust, insensitive, and very easy to care for.

          Sink & faucet:

          • Stainless steel sinks: Lime spots can be removed with a diluted vinegar or citric acid solution.
          • Faucets: Regularly unscrew and descale the aerator (air sprayer at the outlet) to keep the water flow even.

    4. Conclusion and Recommendation

A high-quality kitchen is a durable asset. Conscious and appreciative use significantly extends its service life. The decision between modernization, moving, and new purchase should be based on a rational cost-benefit analysis. Often, targeted modernization is the most economically and ecologically sensible solution. However, from a certain age and degree of wear, or if the basic requirements for the layout change, a new purchase is the better investment in future living quality.
